Fostering Mediterranean fish

ensuring traceability and authenticity

surefish

SUREFISH is a H2020 project funded by the PRIMA (Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area, http://prima-med.org/ ). The main goal of SUREFISH is to valorise traditional Mediterranean fish by fostering the supply-chain innovation and consumer confidence on Mediterranean fish products through deploying innovative solutions to achieve unequivocal traceability and confirming their authenticity, thus preventing frauds.

Accordingly, SUREFISH will implement and demonstrate a global solution to assure fish authentication and reduce fraud based on RFID, Blockchain, TTI and tamper-proof technologies as well as harmonize and validate related analytical methods and create a trans-national laboratories network. At the same time, the project will develop a communication strategy to promote consumer confidence (with certification marks and APPs) and disseminate the results.

SUREFISH approach will be validated through pilot cases located in 4 Mediterranean countries (Spain, Egypt, Lebanon and Tunisia), each focused on a representative Mediterranean species: anchovy, grouper, tilapia and bluefin tuna.

The Surefish consortium has 13 partners from both shores of the Mediterranean Sea (Egypt, Italy, Lebanon, Spain and Tunisia) highly skilled in ICT, blockchain, smart labeling and packaging, innovative analytical and sensory methods for traceability and identification of fraud in fishery products. The project started in March 2020 and will last for 36 months.
